Research Paper Writing Workshop

When:  8 weeks beginning September 12
             Tuesdays 2-3

What:  We will cover how to plan, organize, and compose a research paper.  We will work on how to construct a strong thesis, how to conduct research, how to organize your thoughts logically, and how to properly cite and document for research papers among other topics.  Over the course of the 8 weeks, your student will proceed through each of the steps of composing a research paper from framing a question to final draft.  At each step, I will provide extensive feedback and evaluation.  This course is appropriate for students needing to learn the basics of writing a research paper, as well as students seeking to improve their research skills. 

Who: My name is Brandy Dahlen. I have a master's degree in history from the University of Cambridge, and I have taught at UAB, Jeff State, and Excelsior co-op.  I am extensively trained in research techniques and writing academic papers.

Where: At my home in Pelham

Costs: The course is $200.   $50 deposit due upon enrollment to reserve a space with the balance due by the first day of class.  Enrollment will be limited to the first 10 students. Class size is kept small to enhance discussion.  Because of limited class sizes, all payments are non-refundable.

Ancient History with Ancient Literature

What: This course is a integrated history and literature high school level course (9th-12th grades) intended to introduce the student to the major pieces and authors of the Ancient World, within the proper historical context. This course will involve both writing and reading. We will be reading short and long fiction pieces from Ancient Literature such as Plato, Aristotle, and Greek plays, as well as a full-range of primary documents from the time period. You will be learning how to read, think about, analyze, argue with, and present ideas about history and literature. In class, we will discuss the historical time period, as well as the works of literature we are reading.  This course will count as 2 high school credits:  Ancient History and Ancient Literature.

When: Thursdays from 1:30-2:30 September 2017-May 2018

Where: At my home in Pelham

Costs: The course is $450/year or $250 per semester.  $50 deposit due upon enrollment to reserve a space with the balance due by the first day of class. Enrollment will be limited to the first 15 students. Class size is kept small to enhance discussion.  Because of limited class sizes, all payments are non-refundable.

Summer writing workshops-2017!

Essay Writing Seminar

When:  June 19-22, 2017  Middle school/beginning writers 12:30-1:30
                                High school/intermediate and advanced writers 2:00-3:00

What: We will cover the basics of good essay writing during this week including thesis, organization, and examples. Students will work on exercises at class, as well as at home to reinforce their skills. This workshop is appropriate for all range of writers, and I will provide one-on-one feedback on multiple writing assignments over the week.

What: This course will cover strategies and tips for both the ACT and SAT tests.  We will discuss what to expect on the test, techniques to study, and strategies for approaching questions, as well as seeing lots of in-class and at-home practice exercises.

Who: My name is Brandy Dahlen. I have a master's degree in history from the University of Cambridge, and I have taught at UAB, Jeff State, and Excelsior co-op.  I have taught ACT/SAT prep for 10 years both as a tutor and in a classroom setting.
